What to expect
Complete Documentation
Before undergoing bariatric surgery, the first step is to complete documentation that will be provided to you by your healthcare provider or the bariatric surgery program.
This documentation will likely include medical history forms, consent forms for the surgery, and information about the procedure and post-operative care. It is important to carefully review and complete all documentation accurately, as it will help ensure that you are fully prepared for the surgery and that your healthcare team has all the necessary information to provide you with the best possible care.
Psychological Assessment
After completing the necessary documentation, you will typically meet with a psychologist who is a member of the multidisciplinary team for an evaluation. The psychologist may also refer you to a psychiatrist for treatment if needed. Family sessions may be part of this process to ensure adequate support.
Dietician
Assessment
Following the psychological evaluation, you will be evaluated by a dietician. The dietician will assess your dieting history and develop a special eating plan tailored to your cultural requirements and dietary preferences. This step is crucial for establishing the dietary routines you will need to follow after surgery and for improving your physical health and nutritional education.
Endocrinologist
Assessment
You will also be evaluated by an endocrinologist who will assess your condition and initiate a treatment protocol if necessary before confirming the eligibility for surgery.
Treatment
Plan
Decision on best planned treatment plan for you, surgical or non-surgical.
Surgery Day
and Thereafter
On the day of the surgery, you will be admitted to the hospital. Patients are not routinely admitted to the intensive care unit after surgery. Typically, you will be discharged from the hospital on the third or fourth day after surgery. The recovery period usually ranges from four to six months
